Ticks: Ongoing Research, Identification, How to Avoid Ticks

Rebecca Tiffany Trout Fryxell is a Professor in the University of Tennessee Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, specializing in medical and veterinary entomology, vectors, and vector-borne diseases. She joined the department in 2012 and leads a research program focused on improving human and animal health by reducing the negative impacts of arthropods.

Her research includes vector management and control, vector and pathogen surveillance, vector ecology and genetics, and the study of factors that contribute to pathogen transmission. Her current work focuses on Aedes mosquitoes and La Crosse virus, including identifying risk factors and high-risk areas, as well as tick-borne pathogens and veterinary flies and their impacts on animal health and production.

Fryxell is also committed to student research and STEM education. She integrates research into her teaching, encourages students to participate in research symposiums and hands-on experiences, and emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, hypothesis testing, and independent problem-solving.
